  • A combination of direct fuel injection and turbocharging, normally found in luxury vehicle engines, is the key to EcoBoost’s small engine fuel efficiency and big engine power. Twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) completes the picture.

Direct fuel injection

  • Every drop of fuel is burned by injecting a highly pressurized, precise amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder in the engine. An electronic control system varies the timing and intensity of each injection to match the engine’s operating conditions.

Turbocharging

  • Turbocharging uses the engine’s exhaust gases, which would otherwise be wasted, to push more highly compressed air into the engine. The more air in the combustion chamber, the more power you get out.
  • Together with variable cam timing, it generates high torque low in the rev range (rpm) and maintains peak power over a wide range. This gives immediate responsive power when you accelerate.
